How to Handle Your Fear of Rehab

It is hard to admit that you need help with something, but it is even harder to admit to needing help for addiction. Many sufferers are unable to ask for help because they are embarrassed or ashamed. Others feel weak and believe that they can quit themselves. And, while some people do manage to quit alcohol or drugs by themselves, many need professional help. This professional help often comes in the form of a stay in a rehab clinic.

If you have finally agreed to enter a residential clinic for help with an addiction issue, you might be feeling a little bit apprehensive about what is to come. It is natural to be a little bit worried, or even frightened, at the prospect of being away from home for a given period of time, but the reality is that this is something you need to do in order to get better.

Life and Death Situation

If you are struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, you need to look at this as an opportunity to overcome the illness that has been having an adverse impact on your life for so long. At the end of the day, if you continue to abuse drugs or alcohol, it could cause a number or health problems, possibly even leading to death.

The reality is that if you were diagnosed with any other type of illness that required a hospital stay, you would do so with no questions asked. You would not think twice about getting the treatment required to help you beat cancer or recover from a stroke, so why are you hesitating about accepting the treatment that will help you to conquer this illness?

Be Positive

You need to think about the positives and stop dwelling on the negatives. The worst that could happen is that you spend a certain amount of time away from your family, or you fall behind on your work. Maybe you will have to spend your savings on your treatment, but isn’t it far better to do that than spend your savings on an addiction that will only get worse if left untreated?

If you do not get treatment now, you could lose your job permanently, and your relationships will continue to suffer and could become irreparably damaged. You could even find that you lose your home, your family, and everything else you hold dear. Addiction has a way of destroying everything in its wake, and that includes your health. By taking this step towards recovery, you could improve your health as well as rescue your finances and your relationships.

Fear is Normal

Anyone who has to go to hospital or a rehabilitation clinic will feel a little bit frightened. This is entirely normal. You may be scared of what detox will be like and you might be worried about being away from home. Accept that your fears are normal and try to move past them. It is very likely that these fears will disappear as soon as your treatment begins and once you get settled in.

Tour the Clinic

One way to allay your fears would be to take a tour of the treatment facility before you enter. Speak to the staff and ask if you can be shown around before you come to stay. Most clinics will be happy to arrange for a member of staff to meet with you and take you on a tour of the facility. You can then ask for information on what to expect and get some leaflets on the facility. This may help to ease any tension you are feeling regarding your stay.
